AHMEDABAD: As part of a collaborative project to study the nature of fires in buildings with glass exteriors, a live-fire test was conducted at the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IIT-Gn)’s Palaj Campus. This was the fifth test, where a three-store building was set on fire to study the fire-safety hazards posed by modern construction methods and materials.

Global safety science company-UL, in association with Centre for Safety Engineering (CSE) has affiliated with the IIT-Gn for the project.

“The installation of glass, aluminium or composite facades was found to be the culprit of few major building fire accidents in the recent years in India and abroad. It is expected that such tests will provide scientific insights into the interaction between insulating materials, facade materials and building compartments in realistic fire scenarios and help improve their safety,” said professor Sudhir K Jain, director, IIT-Gn.

Interestingly, DK Shami, fire advisor, Union ministry of home affairs, was also part of the project in an advisory role. “Studying fire safety through this project will help understand crucial aspects on the spread of fire and thus, devise strategies on curbing it.

With increasing use of materials such as glass, aluminium and composites, it is crucial to study the associated fire safety hazards. We are making an effort to come up with recommendations and help set standards based on the findings of these study,” said Suresh Sugavanam, managing director – South Asia, UL.

It may be worthy to note that on the sidelines of the event, William Henry Merrill Fire Engineering Laboratory was also inaugurated at IITGn campus.
