Compulsory Registration Scheme for Electronic Products Deferred
The government of India has extended the deadline for the requirement for Compulsory Registration Order to January 2014. This delay is due mainly to the fact that some manufacturers and importers of electronic items have not yet received registration numbers from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Without appropriate registration information, manufacturers and importers cannot meet the new requirements.
Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2012 went into effect on July 3, 2013, and mandates compliance to Indian safety standards for 15 categories of electronic goods. These electronic goods include video games; laptops/notebooks/tablets; plasma/LCD/LED TVs; optical disc players; printers; electronic music systems; and set top box (a device that converts a digital television signal to analog for better viewing).
